As part of CTU’s package of initiatives to battle the current economic climate, we are currently working with local landlords to make use of their empty retail space, whilst also providing a platform for creativity on the High Street. CTU have thus far acquired three vacant retail units in high profile locations which have showcased some of the UK’s best creative talent and attracted them to Camden Town as a place to do business.

CTU’s first Pop Up opened in June 2009 on Chalk Farm Road, its inaugural exhibition being 'Jockstraps and Toast', and opening to much acclaim. Since this initial launch, all three shops have been filled with art, high fashion and design from some of the UK's most exciting creative talent. In total, the shops have hosted 25 1-2 week shows and over 40 Private Views, including environmental and graduate fashion brands, art collectives and high profile PR launches.

Branded by local design practice Conran Design Group, the shops have also been occupied by CTU Members, RKYR and Dexter Moren Associates, who used the space to provide free support to local businesses. Both of which were hugely popular amongst the local community.

The long term aim of the scheme is to improve the sellability of each premises, and to attract a long term lease holder into each space. We are pleased to report that all three shops have now been taken on long term leases. Furthermore, major businesses, employees and students have made an emotional and physical investment with the area, re-connecting with the high street and local community.
CTU is currently finding and securing new premises for future Pop Up Shops, and we expect to announce some new premises very soon.
